Mesalamine, a derivative of 5-aminosalicylic acid, is an anti-inflammatory agent. It can be used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. It may be applied rectally to help treat inflammation involving the end of the colon (sigmoid colon) or the rectum.
