Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that involves inflammation and ulceration in the lining of the large intestine (colon). It often involves a chronic cycle featuring episodes of worsening symptoms (including bloody diarrhea) and asymptomatic periods (i.e. remission).
