What is splenomegaly?
Splenomegaly is an enlarged spleen. The spleen is tucked under the left rib cage next to the stomach. It functions are to filter out and destroy damaged blood cells, prevent infection, produce white blood cells, and store red blood cells. These functions are impaired if the spleen is enlarged.
