What is butterfly (malar) rash?

A butterfly (malar) rash is a medical sign consisting of a characteristic form of facial rash. It is often seen in Lupus erythematosus and it may also be seen in other diseases such as dermatomyositis and Bloom Syndrome. The word malar comes from the Latin word mala meaning jaw or cheek-bone.
