Portal vein thrombosis

What is portal vein thrombosis?

Portal vein thrombosis is a blood clot that is obstructing the portal vein, which brings blood to the liver from the intestines. The increased pressure in the portal vein causes the spleen to enlarge, and other veins to dilate and twist in the esophagus and stomach; internal bleeding may occur.
