What is JC virus?

The JC virus is a member of the polyomavirus family. It is thought to cause diseases such as Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) in immunosuppressed patients. The virus is carried by a majority of people and is harmless except to those with lowered immune defenses.
