What is central sleep apnea?

Central sleep apnea results from failure of stimulation by the respiratory centers in the medulla; both hereditary varieties and varieties accompanying other brainstem disorders have been observed. It is distinct from obstructive sleep apnea, which is caused by a blockage of the airway.
