What is aspiration pneumonia?

Aspiration pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs and airways to the lungs (bronchial tubes) from breathing in foreign material. It commonly occurs in patients with altered mental status who have an impaired gag or swallowing reflex. Treatment is directed to the infectious agent or underlying cause.
