The Biden administration has announced a White House initiative aimed at enhancing how the federal government approaches and funds research into women's health. The initiative recognizes the underrepresentation of women in health research. Led by First Lady Jill Biden and the White House Gender Policy Council, it seeks to address gaps in research and potential consequences for women's health. President Biden emphasized the importance of bold initiatives to drive innovation and close research gaps.
The effort was prompted by concerns raised by women's health advocate Maria Shriver. Her goal is to emphasize the need to answer medical questions through research. The initiative aims to involve leaders from relevant government departments and agencies. These include Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, Defense, and the National Institutes of Health.
The President's memorandum directs the reporting of concrete recommendations within 45 days to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of women's health issues. There is a focus on transformative investments in priority areas such as heart attacks in women and menopause. Collaboration with the scientific, private sector, and philanthropic communities is also encouraged. Carolyn Mazure, from the Yale School of Medicine, will chair the research effort.
