In a recently published study, researchers shed light on a concerning link between sweetened beverage consumption and atrial fibrillation (A-fib). This is a potentially dangerous heart risk characterized by an irregular heartbeat.

The study found that consuming two liters or more per week of artificially sweetened beverages, equivalent to a medium-sized fast-food diet soda per day, increased the risk of A-fib by 20% compared to those who consumed none. Similarly, added-sugar beverages raised the risk by 10%, while pure, unsweetened juices were associated with an 8% lower risk. This study is the first of its kind. It highlights the association between no- and low-calorie sweeteners, sugar-sweetened beverages, and an increased risk of A-fib.
