Scientists at the University of Copenhagen have made a groundbreaking discovery that could change the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. They have identified a new drug target called the Neurokinin 2 Receptor (NK2R). This has shown remarkable benefits in preclinical studies! Unlike current weight-loss drugs, this new therapy lowers appetite and increases calorie burning without causing common side effects like nausea or the loss of muscle mass. It also improves insulin sensitivity, potentially reversing diabetes.
Current Treatments
The newest approach to medical weight loss and diabetes treatment is based on the GLP-1 hormone. These drugs, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, have helped many people lose weight and improve health. However, these drugs often cause nausea, vomiting, and reduced effectiveness in individuals with both obesity and type 2 diabetes. With over 380 million people worldwide living with these combined conditions, the need for better treatments is urgent.
NK2R-Approach
The new NK2R-based approach addresses these issues by targeting both sides of the energy balance equation. It reduces appetite and increases the body’s ability to burn calories. Early studies in mice and non-human primates have shown promising results! They have seen weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and reductions in cholesterol and triglycerides. If these findings translate to humans, this therapy could be a game-changer for nearly 400 million people worldwide.
“While GLP-1-based therapies have revolutionized patient care for obesity and type 2 diabetes, safely harnessing energy expenditure and controlling appetite without nausea remain two Holy Grails in this field. By addressing these needs, we believe our discovery will propel current approaches to make more tolerable, effective treatments accessible to millions more individuals.”
Associate Professor Zach Gerhart-Hines, NNF Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) at the University of Copenhagen

The researchers are optimistic about moving this discovery into clinical trials. This discovery could lead to more effective and tolerable treatments for people living with obesity and type 2 diabetes.
