President Joe Biden has signed a sweeping executive order aimed at advancing women's health research. This marks a significant step forward during Women's History Month. Described as the "most comprehensive set of actions" by a president in this regard, the initiative will focus on addressing diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect women.
In his State of the Union address earlier this month, President Biden highlighted the chronic underfunding of women's health research. He also called on Congress to approve $12 billion to support a women's health fund for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Key Objectives
1. Research on Women's Health after Menopause: The order supports research into women's midlife health and diseases prevalent after menopause, such as heart disease and osteoporosis. With declining estrogen levels after menopause, women face increased risks of heart disease due to arterial thickening and cholesterol imbalance. Osteoporosis, characterized by bone density loss, is also a concern. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will be directed to enhance data collection and management of menopause-related issues.
2. Inclusion of Women in Clinical Trials: Efforts will be made to improve the recruitment, enrollment, and retention of women in clinical trials. Historically, women have been underrepresented in clinical research. As a result, this leads to gaps in understanding how they respond to treatments compared to men. The executive order aims to address this disparity by leveraging technological and data science advances to reduce barriers to participation.
3. Focus on Conditions with Different Symptoms for Men and Women: The initiative will prioritize conditions that affect women disproportionately, such as Alzheimer's disease and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Women have a greater lifetime risk of Alzheimer's, partly due to their longer lifespan. Other factors like sex hormones contribute to the higher prevalence of RA among women. The executive order aims to deepen understanding of these conditions and their unique manifestations in women.

President Biden's executive order underscores the importance of prioritizing women's health research. It also looks to address longstanding disparities in medical research and care. By investing in research and improving representation in clinical trials, the initiative aims to advance knowledge and treatment options for women's health conditions, ultimately improving health outcomes for all.
