A recent study showed that children with preexisting mental health problems face more challenges in recovering from concussions. The research, led by Dr. Matthew Grady from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, found that troubled kids not only exhibit more emotional symptoms after a concussion but also take a longer time to fully recover. The study involved over 3,100 children who had experienced concussions, and results indicated a dose-response relationship between the number of mental health diagnoses and the severity of emotional symptoms post-concussion.
The Impact of Concussions
Concussions can have a number of effects on children, physically, emotionally, and cognitively. Common physical symptoms include persistent or severe headaches, balance and coordination issues, and nausea or vomiting. Cognitive effects may be memory problems, slowed reaction time, and difficulty concentrating. Emotional and behavioral changes can include irritability, sadness, and heightened emotional responses. Sensory disturbances such as sensitivity to light and noise, as well as blurred vision, may also occur.
Additionally, children with concussions may face challenges in recovery. Often, they experience a prolonged recovery period and delays in returning to physical activities, including sports. The educational impact is also notable. It's crucial for parents and caregivers to seek prompt medical attention and adhere to appropriate guidelines for managing and mitigating the impact of concussions on children.
Mental Health
Children with prior mental health diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, and others, demonstrated increased emotional burden such as irritability, sadness, and nervousness. Additionally, these children experienced issues with vision and balance and had a prolonged recovery period, including delayed return to exercise. Notably, boys with extended recovery periods displayed more emotional turmoil than girls.
This highlights the importance of screening and treating mental health concerns. With screening, we can get a comprehensive understanding of the potential effects of concussions. It is also important to consider preexisting mental health status when guiding the recovery of young patients with concussions.
