A recent Stanford University study involving 17 senior communities across the U.S. found that virtual reality (VR) experiences positively impact seniors' emotions and interactions with staff. The study aimed to explore the potential benefits of VR for seniors' health and emotional well-being. The focus was particularly for those affected by dementia. Seniors, aged 65 to 103, engaged in seven-minute VR experiences. These included things like parachuting, riding in a tank, or visiting different locations. They used headsets that provided 360-degree views and sounds.
Results
The results showed that nearly 80% of seniors reported having a more positive attitude after their VR session. Also, almost 60% felt less socially isolated. Caregivers observed improved moods in nearly 75% of residents after using VR. Additionally, more than 80% of residents and almost 95% of caregivers reported that discussing their VR experience enhanced their relationships.
The study showed that seniors aged 80 and 90 enjoy VR less than those in their 70s. This feedback can lead to potential modifications, such as reducing neck rotation requirements and enlarging visuals. There are a number of companies addressing common complaints about VR, including heavy headsets and heat generation.
Using VR to Spur Memories
Virtual reality is also being used in senior facilities that house individuals with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. They are doing this to spur memories and facilitate conversations with caregivers. VR has been found to help seniors with Alzheimer's remember past experiences. Certain games, such as catching butterflies, can enhance mobility and flexibility for seniors.
Future Impact
The study underscores the potential of VR as a tool for improving the well-being of seniors, offering an immersive and enjoyable experience that positively impacts their emotions and relationships. Companies are working to address challenges and improve the comfort and accessibility of VR technology for the elderly.
