For the eighth consecutive year, the National Football League has continued to support philanthropic endeavors through the My Cause My Cleats initiative. With custom designs, players step on to the field supporting issues close to their hearts. Players represent dozens of causes. This year, six NFL players have chosen to raise awareness of lupus and support the Lupus Foundation of America. Two players have supported the foundation in previous years, whereas the other four have chosen it for the first time. The Lupus Foundation is an organization dedicated to researching, understanding, and ultimately finding a cure for the condition. Lupus affects around 1.5 million Americans, with an estimated 16,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
My Cause My Cleats allows players to express their support, but also serves as a fundraising opportunity for the league and community at large. 100% of the money raised through auction is donated to the players' respective charities. As a result, from 2016 to 2022 this initiative has raised over $1.5 million. NFL players support a number of causes beyond lupus, including mental health services, women's health initiatives, and social justice.
