What is necrobiosis lipoidica?

Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) often starts as a dull, red, raised area, then progressing to look like a shiny scar with yellowish to red-brown color. The blood vessels under the skin may become easier to see. Sometimes NL can cause a break in the skin and may be itchy and painful.
